Stop thinking and start feeling - and join us for a week-long restorative and wellbeing retreat where we will unpack stress and learn to create balance in our lives with time to reflect, pause and marvel at the beauty within and around us.
The setting is in the remote, un-spoilt village of Mairena nestled in the high Alpujarras region of the southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Andalucia, southern Spain.
Caroline and Angie present a daily programme of gentle yoga, health, nutrition and wellbeing workshops and there’s an optional range of activities including local walks, visits to the olive mill and silk weaver, opportunities to forage fresh ingredients and cooking demonstrations showcasing the stunning local cuisine.
And of course, there is the opportunity to simply sit beneath the scented jasmine by the plunge pool, contemplate the incredible views and the unique flora and fauna of the Alpujarras, disturbed only by the sound of mountain streams.
This is a week where you can truly give yourself permission to relax, switch off, sit back, smile and let your cares slip away. There is also the intention to create a personalized programme to take home so that you can incorporate what you learn here in your daily life, continue the good practice and maintain the balance.
ABOUT CAROLINE AND ANGIE
Caroline has worked as a Homeopath, Flower Essence Prescriber & Health Coach for over 20 years. She is a hormonal health expert and draws on many years’ experience of working in PR for complementary health, teaching holistic parenting, organic lifestyle, sustainable and natural health workshops. She trained with Stella Berg, Robert Davidson and Robin Murphy and has tutored and lectured since 2003 at the College of Practical Homeopathy, Southern College of Homeopathy & the Centre for Homeopathic Education. She also supervises student clinics and has lectured extensively at post-graduate level and offers practitioner development & supervision.
Angie was bought up in a family of natural health practitioners. Both her parents were skilled naturopaths and herbalists who practised kinesiology, reflexology and homeopathy. After a busy career in PR, Angie came back to her roots and trained as a yoga teacher at triyoga completing their two-year, 390-hours diploma under the mentorship of Susannah Hoffman, Jeff Phenix, and Carlos Pomeda as well as detailed and in depth training with Anna Ashby and Chris Swain focusing on the practice, art and teaching of Restorative Yoga. Angie has a friendly and inclusive approach to yoga with a style that combines gentle breath-based movement with precise instruction, alignment and creative sequencing – incorporating the teachings of yoga in an enquiring way that helps makes sense of the modern world. Angie is fully certified with the British Wheel of Yoga and Yoga Alliance.
Our accommodation is at Las Chimeneas - a hidden gem of exquisitely converted/renovated traditional village houses situated in one of the most energetically powerful spots in Europe. The houses are handsome, filled with light with fabulous views across the hills to the sea in the far distance. The delightful rooms are very comfortable; some shared, some single, all with en-suite bathrooms. Communal areas and nooks and crannies furnished with authentic antiques from rural Old Spain and lots of books together with an exceptional restaurant which will surprise and delight you with the fabulous quality of its freshly made seasonal produce.
Owners David and Emma have a deep knowledge of and passion for the local area and above all supply peace and relaxation combined with a genuinely warm welcome. Perhaps it is this winning combination that led The Times to rate Las Chimeneas in their Top Ten in Europe’s best mountain hideaways in the summer of 2018.
We will begin each day in the yoga shala looking out over the Alpujarras, breathing in pure mountain air. Most mornings will be a yoga session with Angie and on a couple of days we’ll explore awakening with Chi Gung exercises and meditation through movement with Caroline.
After a shared breakfast there will be a talk or workshop with Caroline on a variety of themes: natural health, understanding your yoga body, creating a safe restorative space for yourself and helping to demystify what we read on the internet.
In these sessions we’ll look to nature for our inspiration and venture out to tune in, drink deep and listen to the messages that come.
After an afternoon to yourself you will relax and restore during a late afternoon restorative yoga session in the beautiful mountain shala, surrounded by nature.
Throughout the week we’ll also help you create your own personalized take home yoga routine for daily practice as well as your own health plan for self-care.
Then there’s lunch – all meals are prepared using lush local produce, some from the Las Chimeneas organic farm, and at this time of year the fruit is ripe – we’re really looking forward to that!
The afternoon is yours to read, relax by the plunge pool, journal, have a massage or explore the natural beauty surrounding the white-washed walls of Las Chimeneas.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, there are plenty of options to choose from - a high ridge hike, a local history talk & walk to the local church, a visit to the silk weavers and the olive oil press or learning to cook the Spanish way.
Angie and Caroline will also be available for one to one sessions some afternoons.
Each day, before a delicious dinner of the very best Andalucian cooking at Las Chimeneas’ restaurant, there’ll be restorative yoga session that helps release physical tension and encourages the connection with a more conscious and ‘natural’ breath; a most powerful tool in bringing about a relaxed, grounded and centred state of being.

The stunning cuisine at Las Chimeneas is focused on vegetarian but we can cater for all tastes. Please advise on dietary requirements or any allergies at time of booking.
WHAT TO BRING
Yoga mats are included but bring your own if you wish. Bring yoga clothes, a light blanket or shawl for restorative yoga, walking shoes, comfortable clothes, sunglasses and sun factor.

My introduction to Las Chimeneas was 2 years ago at a friend’s kitchen table in the Lobras Valley – I was reading her copy of the Las Chimeneas cookbook and loving the immersion in village life it portrays, not just the food and its provenance, but the people and the magic of the High Alpujarras.
A seed of inspiration came in – I must go there. The little seed lay quietly for a while and then started to germinate into talks with my yoga teacher friend Angie Klein to create a Wellbeing Retreat together. And we both love this part of Spain so here we are, 2 years on, mapping out the details for our week long Wellbeing Retreat this September at Las Chimeneas.
What I love about Las Alpjuarras is the opportunity to return to and discover the simplicity of what we need in life, what keeps us steady, what restores us.
We lead a much faster-paced life now and much of what happens demands that we react fast, that we reply immediately to emails, news and messages. This leaves us less time to be proactive in life, to establish what we’d like to have in our lives and make plans for it and no time at all to simply be idle and watch the clouds go by.
We need to remind ourselves how to draw boundaries, what to say yes to and say no to.
So many of my clients come and we realise in the session ‘it’s just work’ and we spend time identifying what is important in life and how to get more of it, how to achieve a healthier balance.
Up in the Alpujarras we see the deeper rhythms of life more clearly, we see that in order for the land to bear fruit, tasks need to be done in a timely way, some things daily, some things monthly and some yearly – and there is an elegance about the pace of it.
At the edges of the village are the tall sweet chestnut trees that we harvest for their nuts, rich in starch, protein and fats that we then store for their sustenance throughout the year.
The strong straight boughs of the chestnut are used for the ‘vegas’ the classic wooden beams you see giving structure in the village houses. The tree literally makes our safe space and gives us protection.
And this is the value of our Wellbeing Retreat – time to go deeper with daily yoga, silent walks and appreciating our surroundings. Time to identify the challenges in our lives, harvest our own skills, set store what we value and make some plans for surviving the year ahead.
Much like the chestnut trees that we visit each year for their fruits and strong boughs, the retreat space can give us the sustenance we need to survive our busy 21st century lives. We look forward to welcoming you!
